House Update: Real Antique Wood Ceiling Beam

Happy Wednesday ! I’ve been waiting patiently to finally share this blog post and am so excited about it! If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ve probably seen my love for reclaimed wood numerous time. From side tables next to our sofa, to our reclaimed barn wood headboard, along with our dining table and coffee table. I just love the warmth and homey feel that reclaimed wood brings into a room or home. I’m also a huge “interior texture” lover, and nothing beats reclaimed wood in that department. It’s so timeless. Here is a “Before” and “After” photo of the kitchen renovation. I hope you enjoy the transformation!

During our recent renovation, I knew I wanted to add in reclaimed wood into the design but wasn’t sure where. I eventually decided to put a beam in the kitchen to add some texture and breakup all of the white, and also decided on a reclaimed wood mantel on our master bedroom fireplace. The next step was figuring out where I was going to find these pieces. I searched online and found a few “faux” beams and mantels from different companies, but it just wasn’t what I was going for. I wanted the real thing and was willing to wait to find it!

It actually ended up being perfect timing when Real Antique Wood reached out to work together right around the same time I was doing all of this research. In our old apartment, Dylan and I used Real Antique Wood to find our reclaimed wood to make our barn wood headboard and dining table after finding them via a google search. Our headboard and dining table are still to this day some of my favorite pieces of furniture that we have. Every time Dylan and I visited or needed more wood for a new project, they went above and beyond to help us create it and have always shown us the best customer service. I ended up heading into their store/lumber yard in New Jersey again (one of my favorite places for interior inspiration – so many reclaimed wood options to choose from to make things!) and found THE perfect beam to use for the ceiling in the kitchen and for our mantel, and bonus, they deliver!

I was a bit worried and unsure how we’d get the beam in the kitchen up into the ceiling since it needed to be 22 feet long and I thought it would be too heavy, but Anthony explained their process and how they make the beam lightweight enough to lift and install. They simply hollow out the beam and create 3 sides to it, so majority of the weight is removed but it still looks exactly the same.

For our reclaimed wood mantel, we used the same exact beam that I picked out for the kitchen since it’s so beautiful, but this time they didn’t hollow it out since it didn’t need to be. It was still really easy to pick up and install so we had no problems! We simply installed L brackets upside down into the fireplace, then placed the mantel on top and drilled the L bracket into the mantel to hold it in place. I painted the L bracket to match the beam, and we were done! Super easy install and it adds so much warmth and texture to the room. Here is a “Before” and “After” image as well from the renovation. This fireplace took so long to do!

I’ve worked with Real Antique Wood 3-4 different times now, and they’re hands down my go-to when I need to find reclaimed wood for a new project. Make sure to reach out to them to help you with any of the projects you’re working on!
